Toronto’s biggest hackathon
– Project Description
In the months leading up to Elevate TechFest 2018, the Elevate team, working with founding partner TD, approached Hackworks to help create Toronto’s biggest hackathon.
Over a 48-hour hackathon at MaRS, more than 500 hackers worked tirelessly rallying behind one theme: how can we use data and technology to make Toronto a more inclusive, safe and vibrant city in which to live and work.
500 hackers including civic innovators, creative designers, developers and technical experts worked in teams of 4-8 to solve the following challenge statements:
What innovations and technologies will define the future smart economy? How will local businesses and consumers engage in relevant and meaningful interactions that promote local commerce?
Smart Vibrant Living
What innovations and technologies will enhance our culture and wellbeing? What role can data and technology play in ensuring connection and day-to-day happiness in a smart city?
Smart Connected Communities
What innovations and technologies will facilitate healthy and safe connected communities, considering the benefits and needs of human interaction?
Developed event strategy and generated a project plan
Designed event experience and finalized logistics
Created hackathon branding materials
Recruited judges, mentors, and participants
Ran hackathon and provided support for a successful hack
Cisco was looking to identify up-and-coming tech talent for future co-op and full-time opportunities. So, they invited computer science and engineering students to Swim with the Big Fish, and work out of their cutting-edge North American Innovation Centre for 48 hours surrounded by their IoT technologies and prototypes.
