Democratizing Technology and Empowering Nonspecialists with Hackathons
This piece was written by Patti Mikula, CEO & Co-Founder of Hackworks.
I was speaking with David Sharma yesterday about industry tailwinds and how hackathons and challenges fit into the current innovation environment. David is the former CPO at Telus and he is a member of our Advisory Board at Hackworks and our conversations always get me thinking in the best of ways.
I thought my answer to David’s question would make an interesting share here. I’d love to get additional thoughts and perspectives.
Gartner recently released their report on the Top Strategic Technology Trends of 2024. They identified three themes that encompassed all of the top trends. One of the themes was the “Rise of the Builders”, emphasizing the empowerment of individuals and developers to harness the right technology for each function.
As businesses strive to foster a culture of innovation and enable their workforce to become creators, rather than just workers, the role of hackathons and innovation challenges becomes increasingly pivotal.
Hackathons and innovation challenges serve as catalysts for driving creativity and problem-solving within organizations. These events provide a platform for employees to collaborate, brainstorm, and experiment with cutting-edge technologies such as AI, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications.
By fostering cross-functional teams and encouraging participation from diverse skill sets, businesses can unlock a wealth of innovative ideas and solutions that may have otherwise remained untapped.
One of the key benefits of collaborative tools like hackathons and innovation challenges lies in their ability to democratize technology. As Gartner suggests, empowering nonspecialists to create solutions is essential in today’s digital era. These events provide an opportunity for individuals from various departments and backgrounds to contribute their unique perspectives and insights. By breaking down silos and fostering a culture of inclusivity, businesses can harness the collective intelligence of their workforce to drive meaningful innovation.
Furthermore, hackathons and innovation challenges offer a practical way for organizations to execute on their “Rise of the Builders” strategy. By engaging directly with employees and providing them with the resources and support needed to explore new technologies and ideas, businesses can align their innovation efforts with their strategic objectives. Developing a roadmap for allowing nonspecialists to participate in these events ensures that innovation is not limited to a select few but is instead embraced across the entire organization.
Collaboration between innovation, technology and business stakeholders is crucial in maximizing the impact of hackathons and innovation challenges. By working closely with business leaders to understand their needs and objectives, innovation and technology teams can tailor these events to address specific challenges and opportunities. This alignment ensures that innovation efforts are aligned with business goals and priorities, ultimately driving value for the organization as a whole.
My tl;dr is this: Hackathons and innovation challenges play a vital role in enabling businesses to capitalize on the “Rise of the Builders” theme. By empowering employees to become creators and fostering a culture of innovation, organizations can stay ahead of the curve and drive meaningful change in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. As we look to the future, embracing these collaborative and inclusive approaches to innovation will be key to success in an increasingly competitive market.
And if I am being honest, if I look at the clients we have worked with over the past 9 years, I can see that many were already “ahead of the curve” in this area and while I may be biased, I would suggest that their use of hackathons and challenges as a tool to inspire and empower their own teams of “builders” is not just an indicator but also a contributor to their successes.
